The Nobel Connection at HKBU
The 2001 Chemistry Nobel Prize winner, Professor K. Barry Sharpless, was the post-doctoral research supervisor of our chemistry colleague Professor Albert Lee. All together, five scientists at HKBU had worked under the direct supervision, either as Ph.D. students or post-doctoral researchers, of a Chemistry Nobel Laureate. Four of them are from the Chemistry Department.

Prof. Rick W. K. Wong, Vice-President of Research and Development,
with GEOFFREY WILKINSON (Nobel Prize, organometallic chemistry, 1973) at Imperial College.

Dr. M. H. Mok (Retired in 2006. Former vice-President of Administration, former Head of the Chemistry Department) and
Prof. S. K. So (Physics Department),
with JOHN C. POLANYI (Nobel Prize, dynamic of chemical elementary processes, 1986) at the University of Toronto.

Dr. Frank S. C. Lee (Retired in 2003), Chemistry Department,
with SHERWOOD ROWLAND (Nobel Prize, ozone depletion, 1995) at the University of California, Irvine.

Prof. Albert W. M. Lee, Chemistry Department,
with K. BARRY SHARPLESS (Nobel Prize, asymmetric catalysis, 2001) at MIT.

Professors Polanyi, Sharpless, and Rowland visited our University in 1991, 1996 and 2000 respectively.
