Welcome to the Department of Chemistry of Hong Kong Baptist University!

The Department of Chemistry was among the first departments pioneering the paths where the “Hong Kong Baptist College” evolved into HKBU. As it did then, our Department continues to thrive, based on a solid foundation built by generations of our researchers and academics, bolstered by our adaptability in the face of the unprecedented global pandemic challenges in recent years.

While these have been challenging times for both science and education, the Department of Chemistry remains resilience. Indeed, we not only endure but excel. Our scholars rank among the world’s top 2% most-cited scientists; they lead award-winning research projects and produce patent-pending inventions, both of which are creating significant scientific impacts in their respective fields. Throughout these years, we have made substantial progress in deepening and broadening our research strengths; our faculty members are now making ground-breaking discoveries in the diverse fields of Analytical Sciences, Bioinorganic Chemistry, Chemical Biology, Medicinal Chemistry, Drug Discovery, Neuroscience and Materials Science.

While cultivating a dynamic research environment, the Department also maintains teaching and service to humanity as key missions. We take pride in offering two Bachelor of Science programmes and a taught Master of Science postgraduate programme; both of these are highly acclaimed for bringing theoretical science into practical application: for bridging the gap between lab bench and industry.

In today’s rapidly changing world, the Department of Chemistry is committed to creating and maintaining an adaptive, stimulating, and effective learning environment to nurture the next generation’s young leaders in chemical sciences. Notably, we embrace equal opportunity and diversity as the core values in undertaking international, competitive, innovative, and collaborative research at all levels. I look forward to continuing the excellent work which has, so far, placed us at the forefront of cutting-edge chemical research and education.
