As the Science Faculty approaches its 60th anniversary, I am happy to introduce the recent achievements and the future evolution of the Department of Chemistry.
In the past two years, the number of publications from our Department has risen and the University has rewarded us with funding to procure equipment to enhance and broaden our current capabilities. In the near future, our Department will progress towards a new direction focusing on bio- and chemical technology. Our researchers have developed ground-breaking techniques for use in drug development and discovery, diagnosis of diseases and antibiotic resistance.
The Department of Chemistry currently admits two Bachelor of Science degrees and one taught Master of Science postgraduate degree with emphasis on Analytical Chemistry and Testing Sciences. We will continue to improve our Department by internationalization and invite top scientists worldwide to join our Faculty. Our aim is to strive towards cutting edge research and enhance both the quantity and quality of our scholarly outputs.
Founded in 1956, The Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) is a government-funded, higher learning institution offering a diverse undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. The Science Faculty is composed of five departments: Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Mathematics and Physics. Chemistry is regarded as a central science subject because it can be multidisciplinary, branching out to solve global contemporary problems. The Department of Chemistry comprises of about 20 full-time faculty members who are professional and strongly dedicated to excellence in teaching and research. We offer two undergraduate programmes, B.Sc. (Hons.) in Chemistry as well as B.Sc. (Hons.) in Analytical and Testing Sciences.
The Chemistry programme is designed to gain and strengthen the knowledge in four areas – analytical, inorganic, organic, and physical, providing more diverse and deeper aspects of chemical principles and selected applications. The Analytical and Testing Sciences programme, which took in its first student cohort in 2013, is designed to provide specific knowledge in chemical testing, instrumental analysis, certification and quality assurance of manufacturing products as well as in the monitoring of the environment, food sources, drugs and consumer products. Both programmes offer various major elective courses and final year research projects for gaining professional knowledge and laboratory experience in specific chemical topics to suit the future needs in Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area.
We offer a research postgraduate programme leading variably to a M.Phil. and a Ph.D. degree in various cutting-edge research areas of pure and applied chemistry. The Department has been offering a taught MSc degree programme in Analytical Chemistry since 1992, which is currently offered in both part-time and full-time modes. This programme is aimed at providing advanced training for working professionals in the field of chemical analysis and related areas. Many of our graduates have assumed key positions in commercial and public analytical laboratories.
