Miss Ashley Ho See Lok, PhD student of the our Department, won the first runner-up of the Oral Presentation Award at the 21st Symposium of Chemistry Postgraduate Research in Hong Kong on 12 April 2014. The title of Ashley’s presentation is "Self-assembling Protein Platform for Direct Quantification of Circulating MicroRNAs in Serum with Total Internal Reflection Fluorescence Microscopy". This annual symposium was held at The University of Hong Kong this year, attracted over 600 faculty members, research postgraduate students and research assistants from six local universities. The project highlighted the application of protein nanofibril as platform for the direct detection of circulating microRNAs. The developed assay has applied for the quantification of circulating microRNAs in both normal and cancerous serum samples. Her presentation was well received and the audience found her work very interesting.
Under the supervision of Dr. Li Hung-Wing, Ashley’s PHD work focused on studying the inhibitory effect of synthetic compounds on amyloid aggregation and developing simple but highly sensitive methods for the analysis and quantification of nasopharyngeal carcinoma associated microRNAs, with the aid of microscopy and optical spectroscopy. The established assays can be applied for early cancer diagnosis as well therapy for Alzheimer’s disease.
